No love for charter schools

The number of school charters that have been awarded by the State Board of Education is 215, which is the cap that current law allows. The 17,000 kids on waiting lists indicate that the cap should be removed, as suggested by the president. State Sens. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, and Florence Shapiro, R-Plano, were able to negotiate a bill that allowed only 12 new school charters per year.

On May 31, before the last vote to send the bill to the governor, Lon Burnam, D-Fort Worth, killed the bill on a point of order. The Quorum Report quoted him as saying, “I hate charter schools.”

I wonder if he also hates those 17,000 kids who must wait another two years to make their educational choice.
